I got a tattoo when I was eighteen years old. It wasn’t something that I did just because I could though. I got the words “Once upon a time” tattooed on my left shoulder, and I think it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Fairy tales are important to me, and I never want to forget the lessons I have learned from them. The Grimm Brothers and Han Christian Anderson are inspiration to me to learn from my mistakes. Fairy tales were written to teach important lessons, and every time I look in the mirror and see my tattoo I remember that I cannot change the past but I can sure as heck learn from it. Many people in my family don’t like my tattoo, but I believe that it is something I needed to do and I have absolutely no regrets.
“Yet she was not produced from Adam’s foot, to be his low inferior, nor from his head to be his superior, but from his side, near his heart, to be his equal.”

Sometimes I have to take a break from my writing and just think about the pieces I’m writing about and how beautiful they are. I am so grateful for my AP English teacher forcing literary terms into my brain that have stuck with me, and that I am able to appreciate the beauty of antithesis. Sometimes I forget why I chose to be an English major, and then little things remind me of the power of writing and why I’m doing this to myself.
